The little Oscarvarian’s original design was a bit more elongated, and he had black eyes. But I dunno, he looked a bit too sinister-looking, or something, so I altered the design to make him way kyooter.

I’ll fess up and say that the fact that I was re-reading Jeff Smith’s Bone at the time definitely influenced this little guy’s final design.
