As a kid who grew up in a country that was saturated with the influence of American pop-culture while also having no inherent ties to it, I was in the position of being very familiar with all manner of aspects concerning life the United States (via books, TV, movies, and current affairs etc.) while simultaneously having the objective viewpoint of someone looking at it all from the outside in.
Thusly, to me the Kit-Cat Clock is an indubitable paragon of iconic Americana. So of course the Gish family just had to have one ticking in their kitchen, grinning away with its patented patently-deranged face; a blatantly Sinister visage hiding in plain sight behind the guileful guise of the Cute.
It’s so exquisitely eldritch in nature it’s damn near Lovecraftian.
